Photoblog | Backstage at Montreal Fashion Week!

Major chignons and top knots completed the look for Nadya Toto's Fall 2010 Show

Major chignons and top knots completed the look for Nadya Toto's Fall 2010 Show

Extreme hair. Bright red lips. Sky-high heels. Models writing term papers on Barack Obama? I spied all kinds of fashion action, beauty trends (and yes, even homework) backstage last night on Day 1 of Montreal Fashion Week in Collaboration with P&G Beauty. Newcomer Melissa Nepton and the seemingly-reborn Nadya Toto both presented their Fall-Winter 2010 collections,  alongside veterans Muse by Christian Chenail and Marie-Saint Pierre. Caping off the day was Helmer’s show, which doubled as a fundraiser for Handicap International Haiti. I gladly accepted Helmer’s invitation to play model for a day and help raise money for Haiti… in exchange for a backstage pass. All the pics are after the jump!

Celeb meeting | Nicole Richie at Holt’s!

Talk about an awesome shopping date! Thursday morning, I got to hang with the fabulous Miss Nicole Richie at Holt Renfrew! I’d only interviewed her once before, way back in 2006,  for a father-daughter piece with her uber-famous dad Lionel.  Back then, the petite and super polite (hanging with your dad for interviews tends to have that effect!) star was still only known 50% of the ditsy Simple Life Paris-Nicole duo, and was the last person I’d have expected to be considered one of the decade’s rising style icons (hello pink hair extensions and Juicy Couture sweats!) .

Only 4 years later though, Nicole is turning into a mini style-mogul, with a successful accessory line, House of Harlow, which now includes shoes and eyewear on top of great jewelry, a maternity collection for Pea in a Pod, and the brand new clothing line Winter Kate (which is daughter Harlow’s middle name). What makes her so successful? The line IS Nicole Richie. Unlike many other celebrity designers, Nic’s signature style is reflected in every piece; the boho-chic looks from her Spring 2010 collection clearly mimic her personal style, and have an dreamy comfy everyday vibe.

So….fast forward from 2006 to this week for meeting numéro deux with Nicole. Picking an outfit was BEYOND stressful! Five outfit changes later, I settled on a sequined Diesel top, my fave Mavi jeggings, a Montreal made jacket and my killer Ted Baker booties, to chat with the star about her new line, drawing inspiration from the music of Led Zeppelin and Janis Joplin and just a (tiny, tiny ) bit about the new bling she’s sporting on her finger (yep! she and Josh Madden got engaged this week! The video of her announcing it is at the bottom of the post)….And the coolest part of our interview? Learning about Winter Kate’s Montreal connection!  See, Nicole readily admits she needed some partners in crime to produce an amazing line, and she told me all about her decision to team up with Montrealers Rick and Bryan Cytrynbaum, the brothers behind Modern Vintage shoes. Through multiple visits to their offices here in the 514 as well as some inspired brainstorming in her L.A. home, the trio worked on turning Nicole’s personal style into chic, and pretty affordable creations (ranging between 100$ to 225$, the clothes are some of the least expensive at Holt’s!). You can read my interview with the celebrity designer in the June issue of Loulou.  Till then, lots of pics of Nicole’s Montreal visit after the jump!

Anna Wintour, front row at Proenza Shouler...as snapped and tweeted by fashion blogger @bryanboy

With New York’s Mercedez-Benz Fashion Week in full swing since last Thursday, Twitter is abuzz with tweets and twitpics tagged #NYFW. All eyes are on the power tweeters and fashion bloggers, especially this week: Vogue granted a two-page spread to some of the web’s most prominent 2.0. fashionistas, and Tavi, BryanBoy and the likes graced the cover of Wednesday’s Women’s Wear Daily. Plus, if you’re not one of the chosen few sitting in the first rows at the Marc Jacobs show (or watching the live stream)  you can at least follow said ‘chosen few’ and live vicariously through their Blackberrys and Iphones, one tweet at a time. Whether it’s Coco Rocha, Style.com’s Derek Blasberg,  famed blogger bryanboy, or our golden ticket holders here at Loulou : here of some of the last 48 hours’ best #NYFW tweets!

R.I.P. Alexander McQueen- UK Fashion designer dead at 40.

mcqueen-shoes-1

The fashion world was absolutely shocked to learn this morning that flamboyant and celebrated British designer  Alexander McQueen was found dead at his London home on Thursday, after apparently committing suicide, police and reports said.

“He was awesome. He was the best,” said his spokesperson Samantha Garrett. “We’re devastated.” She declined to comment on reports that McQueen, 40 and four times British designer of the year between 1996 and 2003, had killed himself, saying only she wouldn’t elaborate out of respect for his family. The British newspaper The Daily Mail reported shortly after 10 a.m. Eastern time that McQueen had killed himself while Britain’s Sun newspaper said McQueen hanged himself in his luxury apartment.

The newspaper said McQueen’s mother, Joyce, died a week ago and there had been a string of upset posts on the designer’s Twitter page since then. Among them: “been a —ing awful week but my friends have been great but now I have to some how pull myself together.” As of 11:30 Eastern time, his Twitter page was inactive and taken down.

Often known in the early stages of his career as Saville row’s enfant terrible, McQueen was creative director of his own label which was now majority-owned by Gucci, but had not lost his rock n’roll edge. One of his most famous pieces of late was his ‘Skull Scarf’, seen one celebrities such as Nicole Richie, Gwen Stefani and Lindsay Lohan; his Spring 2010 lobster-claw shaped “Armadillo” shoes (photo above) were called “terrifying’ by some, and Lady Gaga was the first to wear them, after she debuted the final cut of her song “Bad Romance” at McQueen’s Spring 2010 show.

The pop star strutted in head-to-toe McQueen to the chant “walk walk, fashion baby, work it move that bitch crazy” in the song’s video. Other celebrities and friends quickly took their Twitter pages to pay tribute. Posting a quote from TS Eliot, Peaches Geldof  @peaches_g, wrote: “RIP Alexander McQueen. “Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.”- T.S. Eliot”. Boy George wrote: “Very, very sad news about Lee McQueen, he was a genius, such tragic news. R.I.P!”, while singer Estelle added: “rip. alexander mcqueen. truly creative genius. super dope. wow.”Dita von Teese, who often wore McQueen, wrote: ”Rest in peace, Mr. McQueen.” Indeed.
