VALÉRIE DUMAINE
If you live in or will be visiting our nation’s capital next week, be sure to check out Fashion Cures à la Mode, taking place from November 4 to 7 to raise funds for Ovarian Cancer Canada.
The four-day fashion event will feature exhibits, parties, a silent auction and runway shows. Designers from across the country will be showing their spring 2010 collections, including Vancouver’s Dace, Montreal’s Valérie Dumaine and Project Runway Canada winner Jason Meyers.
Because, really, how can you go wrong with fun and fashion for a good cause? For more information, visit fashioncureslamode.com.

A look from Marie Saint Pierre's FW09 collection
Does the name Marie Saint Pierre ring a bell? What about Valérie Dumaine, Ève Gravel or Denis Gagnon? No? You’re not alone: According to a study by Leger Marketing, Saint Pierre is the most recognized name in Montreal fashion… but only 12% of 600 people polled knew of her. (FYI: She’s been in the industry for 21 years, has two boutiques in the city and — when she shows her collections — is one of the most coveted tickets and anticipated shows.)
Montreal’s Fashion Commission decided to address the ignorance, if you will, and created an online fashion map (an iPhone app is apparently in the works), pinpointing the city’s designer boutiques, ateliers and retailers. If you’re travelling to la belle province — or even if you live here — it’s a great resource for discovering some of the city’s homegrown talent (and a fab complement to Where LOULOU Shops features, too!).
