I was lucky enough to catch what is being touted as one of Lubov and Max Azria’s best BCBG collections at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week late last week. Chic, simple and wearable are three words that perfectly sum up the looks.

What else caught my eye? Two styling tips: First, layering long-sleeved tees under dresses (perfect for wearing our summer frocks a little early, don’t you think?) and second, cream coloured tights (go buy a pair on sale now, I promise you’ll thank me next fall!).

Is anyone following the FW10 shows? Who is your favourite so far?

Survey: How far will you go for the patterned tights trend?

17318734_001_bThis fall’s been big on statement legwear: sheer and opaque tights are now patterned gallore. Call me “conservative” but my limit’s fishnets (or dressing up an all-black look with textured legwear that approximates the fishnet look). Last week I toyed (mentally) with the idea of rockin’ heart-print tights after recently seeing my favourite Brit, Alexa Chung rocking them. This week, I’m not sure they’re suited to my age style. Then, this morning while browsing a few of my go-to-latest-trend-recap sites, I came across this pretty Urban Outfitters pair followed by this scenario recipe for disaster– would you EVER wear these? Seeing them got me wondering how far the “new” takes on tights will go.

Seriously though, heart-print tights. Who’s wearing them?

Boldly show off your stems

legs-1sm

legs-2sm

Yes my friends, as we mentioned in the October issue it’s time to embrace a pair of stand-out leggings or patterned tights and make a bold statement with your legs.  All week at LG fashion week, it has been hard to miss the front-row women who have plastered everything from python skin and eye-popping pink to bejewelled glam rocker-esque leggings (LOVES!) all over their legs. Above are a few snap of some of the colourful legs seen on gals on Tuesday night.

Personally, I prefer a less is more approach, but I will occasionally delve into pretty, floral patterned tights (always in black). When I want to reve up the sex-appeal, teasing black fishnets are my ticket — and for work, I’ll wear nude fishnets rather than the standard nude or black opaque tight. If I ever step into a colour, its usually a muted colour like grey or dull purple.

So, how far are you willing to go with wild patterns on your stems?

(Top row left to right):  DKNY deep brown zigzag; Andy The-Anh bejewelled yellow leggings; nude tight with black fishnets. (Bottom row): all available at Jacfash, $35

Leggings are not pants, people!

Lindsay LohanThe best part about taking public transportation to work is that it gives me the opportunity to people watch. I enjoy checking out everyone’s looks. I especially enjoy watching a fashion disaster walk by because it’s a pretty clear vision of what I should avoid when dressing myself in the morning.

What Lindsay Lohan fashion faux pas did I see this morning? Read the rest of this entry »

The trials and tribulations of tights

Sonia Rykiel FW 2009One of the indispensable fashion items of fall is the tight. This season they were a top trend, with the printed variety reigning supreme. As much as I love the effect tights can give (and their inevitable warming factor), today I have a beef with these nylon/spandex leg coverings — and I am sure many of you readers can sympathize.

This morning I put on a new pair of burgundy opaque tights to go with my very fall outfit (black dress layered over a beige button-down, I am testing out the librarian-chic look). The moment I walked from my front door to the bus stop I realized that — horrors — the tights were HUGE! Tons of extra fabric was bunched around my knees and ankles, not the chicest of looks. Now they seemed a bit big when I put them on, but at barely 8am in the morning, I’m not a good judge of anything. But I digress.

I made my way to the office and shared my tight tribulation with my fellow LOULOU girls in the kitchen — in between fixing coffee and yanking on the legs of the now dreaded tights. Turns out, all of us have some sort of beef with tights. Either they are too long, too big, too small, too tight, too complicated to put on… And we have some sort of horribly embarrassing tale to tell about tights.

Like the time I walked a block with tights around my knees… Read the rest of this entry »
