Saks to stock designer clothing in plus-sizes: The dawn of a new fashion era?

128925208Brace yourself label-lovers. Fashionista is reporting that starting this fall, the luxury US department store, Saks Fifth Avenue will be integrating plus-size clothing from high-end labels right amidst its “regular” sized high-end designer items on the third floor.

Designers will include Chanel (which will begin making pieces in plus sizes), Oscar de la Renta, McQueen, Fendi and Valentino and sizing will go up to 14 and in some cases 20 . As Fashionista points out, it’s shocking that it’s taken this long for something this “obvious” to occur (but we’re happy it finally is). After all, according to Global Purchasing Group (a New York based buying firm) the plus-sized retail sector is valued at US $27 billion globally.

We caught up with plus-size model, Crystal Renn a few weeks ago for the launch of Ogilvy’s plus-size boutique, Femme and we’re positive she’s pretty pleased with Saks’ baby steps towards a size-neutral shopping experience.

We’re hoping this trend catches on and more Canadian stores adopt the merchandising tactic.

Which stores or brands would you like to see take Saks’ approach to fashion? Comment below or tweet us @louloumagazine

The hotter it gets, the more we shop

audrina-shoppingIt’s mid-week and the Canadian east coast is riding the summer’s first heat wave where 29 feels like 36 or more. On my lunch hour, I spotted people dipping their feet into a nearby statue adorned fountain (we’re getting desperate). When the mercury rises, seeking cool shelter is the only thing that makes sense (and we’re thankful for even the slightest relief, like the blast of cold air blowing onto the sidewalk from nearby stores).

According to a WWD study, 2/3 of US stores on the east coast saw a double digit sales rise thanks to the scorching weather.

Instead of craving the refreshing bliss of a pool dip, it seems consumers are headed indoors shopping, wherever there’s AC. So sales are up thanks to the rise in temperature but surprisingly enough, said folks aren’t just taking advantage of the current summer sales but are also scooping up fall pieces! Go figure. Walking home yesterday all I could fathom was the most close-to-nothing item in my wardrobe that i could change into to walk my dog: coats and boots were not in the equation.  But then again I’m also craving a pool over a shopping mall.  So.

While it might be a hundred degrees outside (literally) as long as there’s AC where the clothes are, the retail economy will continue to boom and all shopping bets are off.
