Last night I watched the Canadian return of The City and let me just say, the gloves are off!
In episodes past, protagonist Whitney Port has always erred on the side of admirably composed and collected when faced with her deviant co-stars (and ironically enough, I’ve always wondered what Whitney is “really” like) but from the looks of the MTV previews, there’s a heated Whitney-Olivia (Palermo) faceoff in the forecast.
In this interview, Whitney sheds her happy-go-lucky persona we’ve come to know and adore and goes on the record for the first time ever, calling Olivia out for all the self-centered, hypocritical antics the audience never doubted for a second.
Truthfully, I adore Whitney for her seeming ability to command every adversity she’s faced with (on the show) with a level head. But up until this week I also believed that courtesy of some very careful editing on MTV’s part, Olivia was consistently being portrayed unfairly. I refused to believe she was the vapid vixen they highlight her to be. Turns out, I might have been a little hasty with my faith in Olivia. I also can’t help but question Whitney’s sincerity in the aforementioned interview– if the entire show is a scripted hoax pinning Whitney against Olivia and vis versa since day one, why wouldn’t the same rule of thumb apply to the way Whitney promotes the show? I guess I’m skeptical about “reality” plots overall.
One thing I am confident about however, is Olivia’s sense of style. I love her modern spin on classic looks and her knack for transforming a simple look with a statement necklace. But I have to admit, her recent penchant for belting everything is starting to confuse me and then there was this overbearing architectural number (pictured at left) which she recently wore to the New Yorkers for Children Spring Dinner Dance. It’s a total miss in my books.
