Spring is coming - and we’ve got the trends

Spring shoppingSpring is like a new beginning in the fashion world. Gone are the drab colours of winter and in come the brights, the skin-showing dresses and the trends that everyone loves to shop for. I get so excited that I’ll start buying spring pieces in January, as soon as they hit the stores (who doesn’t want a frilly top in the middle of winter?).

But at that time of year (and even now) it’s hard to know what the trends are and what I should be investing in. Enter Scarlett Lounge’s Spring Fashion Preview with the top five trends of spring 2010 - straight from the runways. And because I’ve had many regrets splurging on trends (leather pants at $300!) this spring preview features all items at under $50!

From Paris Hilton’s leopard trench to Naomi Campbell’s frills,  I’ve fallen hard for our versions. Add some florals and the LWD, which are the fashion world’s way of making amends for the hard rocker look you’ve been wearing all winter. Keep accessories simple with layered chains that add a modern touch to any spring look.

Now if only I could get the weather to cooperate with my new look.

Who rocked the Oscar red-carpet?

sandrabullock-main22The rain didn’t put a damper on last night’s 82nd Academy Awards–it was awash with glitz and glamour as Hollywood’s big stars paraded along the red-carpet in their most celebratory frocks. Similar to the Golden Globes shimmering metallics, glorious ruffles, sweetheart necklines, pastels shades and soft nudes were the key trends worn at this year’s spectaular event.

Click the pink link below to find out who made it to the top of our best dressed list, who disappointed and which starlet missed the fashion boat entirely. Then cast your vote and let us know who you thought best rocked Hollywood’s biggest fashion night out.

Montreal Fashion Week Results: Déjà vu-in a good way!

Last week was Fashion Week at Marché Bonsecours in the Old Port of Montreal. For four days, the posh district was busy with runway shows and after-parties.

This year’s Montreal Fashion Week (MFW) was full of unusual surprises. First, it was open to the public and not just industry insiders. Second, a crowd of bloggers made themselves comfy at the shows. Result: We were a much bigger crowd of spectators than usual. That being said, the event became larger than life and peaked the interest of people who have no idea that MFW has been around for ages already. This is great for Montreal but not-so-great for a journalist who needs to work in a more peaceful environment.

So far here in Montreal, we’ve had years where new design graduates participated in MFW and made it just too over-the-top. And if it wasn’t too much one year, it was too little. Some designers were hitting MFW with looks that were too old, too boring and too simple. After a few years of this, I started asking myself why Quebec designers just weren’t following the same trends as the rest of the fashion world. Were they just not interested in international fashion?

Well this time, they’re interested in it. So much, in fact, that they showcased the same trends-only two years after they became popular in the rest of the world.

Let me explain myself. At MFW this year we saw bold and embellished shoulders, sequins, military styles and flesh tones. Hello 2008! But despite that, I loved it. I loved it because it’s great to encourage local Canadian designers and because it’s amazing that they can compete with mainstream designers like Elizabeth and James and French Connection in the commercial part of the industry.

Here’s what I thought of some of the main shows at MFW last week: Read the rest of this entry »

Loving Tarina Tarantino

HypershadowA few weeks ago, the lovely gals at Sephora invited me to check out the new items that would be sold in stores and online this spring. Truth be told, I almost lost my composure in there–surrounded by all that beauty booty. I felt like a kid in a candy store! But I digress…

After taking a quick peek around the room, I gravitated toward one particular table–the Tarina Tarantino table. It was an explosion of fuchsia (which just so happens to be my colour!) and was covered with jewelled compacts and intensely coloured makeup.

See more of the Tarina Tarantino collection after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

Two styling tips from BCBG FW10 to start wearing now

I was lucky enough to catch what is being touted as one of Lubov and Max Azria’s best BCBG collections at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week late last week. Chic, simple and wearable are three words that perfectly sum up the looks.

What else caught my eye? Two styling tips: First, layering long-sleeved tees under dresses (perfect for wearing our summer frocks a little early, don’t you think?) and second, cream coloured tights (go buy a pair on sale now, I promise you’ll thank me next fall!).

Is anyone following the FW10 shows? Who is your favourite so far?
