Last-minute gift idea: Rio de Janeiro by Mario Testino

fo_testino_rio_yellow-resizedMario Testino’s latest, Rio de Janeiro is a great addition to even the most happening of coffee tables. Inspired by the Peruvian born fashion and portrait photographer’s childhood in the Brazilian metropolis, Rio’s a journey through the city’s sultry landscape from its scantily clad and inherently sultry citizens to its unparalleled sunsets. With an essay by Gisele Bündchen, it’s without a doubt the perfect gift for the friend on your list with their finger always on the pulse and a penchant for photography—or Testino.

The debate: Ankle boots

olivia_bootsEveryone has their opinions on which trends should and shouldn’t exist (the re-surfacing of clogs for spring/summer ‘10 is already causing commotion) but this year it feels like ankle boots are taking the brunt of the “faux-pas” storm. From fringed to buckled, 2009’s seen them all so after reading this quote from The Wall Street Journal, I was nothing if really shocked that despite they’re omnipresence, the debate’s still raging.

Olivia Palermo (left) is wearing a fringed pair (presumably Balmain or possibly Topshop, which she’s known to love) and I don’t know about you but my fashion-forward eyes tell me she’s ranking pretty high on the stylish scale.

So what’s the big objection to ankle boots? I think most girls in this office will tell you they’re a stylish “winter” alternative to full-on boots and paired with a skirt, I think they look P.D.G (pretty damn good).

Care to provide us with some insight on this one? ‘Cause I I’d love to hear it and there’s nothing like a fashion debate to call it a weekend!

American Apparel polishes up

4307_07American Apparel, the brand probably more popular for their provocative ad campaigns featuring scantily clad staff-come-models than their “Made in L.A” premise, is breaking into beauty, a move that’s expected to bolster sales, with the launch of a full nail polish collection as of this past Wednesday.

Currently available on their site is Rosebud lip balm, Dr.Bronner’s Magic liquid soap and Mason Pearson brushes. The lacquer will be available at 280 stores in 20 countries and the range includes 18 shades all aptly titled from the very of-the-moment minty green “Office” to a “Downtown L.A” red, “Factory Grey” and a black shade, “Hassid,” which is a nod to the company’s Jewish roots.

Like all things American Apparel, this line of polish sounds like it’s got just the right amount of kitsch to make it a winner among the cool kids.

Amber Valletta: NARS new face

valletta

Amber Valletta’s the face of (my favourite makeup brand) NARS’ spring summer 2010 campaign. Featuring spring-perfect soft and light shades of nudes, pink and peaches and purple for nails, the collection is inspired by Catherine Deneuve circa her 1968 role as Lucille in La Chamade. Sporting a very Deneuve-esque ‘do, Valletta channels the iconic Parisian beauty perfectly.
