The ultimate shopping resolutions

Happy New Year LOULOUmagazine.com readers!

shopping-resolution

With a New Year often comes a slew of resolutions. Some people want to take better care of their health, others want to get in shape, others make a pact to spend less. In that grand old tradition I, dear readers, have decided to make some shopping resolutions for 2010.

1. Think before I buy. I often find myself face to face with a gorgeous garment and I can’t say “no!” even if I may have 10 nearly identical pieces hanging in my wardrobe. My first resolution this year is to do a mental scan of my closet before taking that dress to the register - because 9 times out of 10 it is a dress.

2. Ask myself, “do this really look amazing on me”. I have the tendency to fall prey to trends knowing full well that they don’t always work for my figure or my lifestyle. Case in point: I recently (pre-resolution) succumbed to my desire for heavy knits. I bought this out-of-this world cable knit cardi only to have my beau comment that I looked like a 4-year-old lost in her mother’s sweater. This year I will look critically at myself before handing over the cash.

3. Invest in classics. I am getting to that age (yes, the big 3-0 is near) where a wardrobe needs a good ratio of classic pieces versus trendy pieces. As I exit my 20s in 2010, I think it’s time to make sure that ratio leans more towards the classics with trendy items to accent my personal style. Not the opposite. So this means more cashmere, more tailored skirts, a great white shirt and trench (yay!).

4. Shop online more. In 2009, I increased my online purchases and am happy to report that there is no turning back. Thanks to VIP sale sites, discount sites and the increasing diversity of e-tailers there is more and more awesome goodies to be had online - and at AMAZING prices. It’s time to put our shopping inhibitions aside and shop more online if only for the convenience and the good prices.

So, these are my shopping resolutions. Do you guys have any of your own? Please share.

LOULOU and Kate Voegele rock Toronto

blog_julia

As many of you ladies (and gentlemen) are well aware the team at LOULOU has been hard at work this past month in honour of our fifth anniversary. This past Wednesday and Thursday we threw two block parties, one in Toronto and one in Montreal.

Wednesday night in Toronto at our GUESS event (among the many stores hosting LOULOU events) the singer and star of One Tree Hill Kate Voegele performed. I could the chance the chat with her post performance to get her feedback on the event.

Check out what she had to say after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

Last minute shopping? Me too!

The holiday season — and all those parties — are the perfect excuse to throw on a fab frock! Hence my dilemma: We are t-minus three days until Christmas and I still don’t have a dress. So this calls for some intense last-minute shopping.

How will I survive?

Sale heaven, here I come!

Is it just me, or are there sales everywhere and aren’t they happening earlier than usual? These past few days my inbox has been bombarded with newsletters alerting me of 30%, 40%, 50% even 70% off! Holt Renfrew, Banana Republic, Club Monaco, Aldo, Browns… the shopping possibilities are endless. What’s a girl to do?

Well shop of course! But, as you well know, I believe in smart shopping. Which means that I can’t be tempted by the great mark downs alone. Especially when there are so many great ones to choose from! These same smart shopping rules apply to gift shopping. After all, you don’t want to be buying something just because the price is right. You want said something to be fab (and suited to the person you are buying for — even if that person is you!).

So how will I take advantage of the insane sales?

Two steps to easy holiday shopping

Up until recently, I was floating in holiday shopping limbo. I wasn’t turned on by the offerings in store and at a loss for gift giving inspiration. This type of “shopping block” doesn’t usually hit me this early in the season. The holly has just been hung, and the Christmas music has yet to become totally nauseating.

So what got me out of this giving slump?
