Christian Lacroix files for bankruptcy
Yes, you read that correctly. The French couturier, Christian Lacorix has succumbed to this year’s recession and filed for bankruptcy protection. All I can say is sad, sad, sad.
Keep reading to find out why Lacroix will be missed in the fashion industry.
I was really shocked to hear about the news via a text message from my best friend Sophie. She was sneaking a peek at Perez while ignoring her summer school class and texted the bad news to me. I admit, there was a brief moment where we rejoiced at the chance of finding some stuff on sale, but I was still very sad.
All the girls here at LOULOU web were saddened and shocked, too. The New York Times said it perfectly: “Although Lacroix’s chief executive officer, Nicolas Topiol, emphasized that the brand intended to continue operating during the process, the news brings an end to a luxury business model for which Lacroix was the last of the Mohicans.” (Read the rest of the article here.)
Christian Lacorix is a designer unlike most others. The unique and totally outrageous dresses (as seen here) were a trademark of the house of couture and I think the fashion industry will miss it. We’re currently in a period of fashion where anything goes, but we still need the fashion gurus of the world, those born with the influential taste of Lacroix, to guide us in the right direction.
Recession bites! What do you think? Shocked by the fall of Lacroix?

This was inevitable. A lot of the high end designers will eventually follow suit. Real consumers want affordable and wearable fashion. And the way the world is going, even the so called affluent now shop thrift. Look at the new launch of the Alfred Sung line now available at Zellers. Desperate measures for sure but also a smart move. On a final note, I wouldn’t be caught wearing that hideous outfit in the featured photo. Come On!

Hahaha…well, Lisa, I don’t think too many people would actually wear that outfit or many of the other wacky designs Lacroix has made. But I do think that his influence has a huge impact on more affordable fashions. He may have done vibrant colours and bold shoulders to the max, but the idea of colour and the bold shoulders is still present in every line out there right now, from pricey to affordable. I do think that this kind of influence shapes the fashion industry and everything that we choose to wear, whether we are conscious of it or not. But the move to affordable by many designers is definitely a good move and I don’t know many shoppers who are opposed to the idea.

Well, as sad as I am I’m not exactly one of his customers–not many people are.
Unfortunately, fashion has became so much more trendy than years past so styles just don’t last long. That’s why stores like Forever 21 http://canada.forever21.com/ , H&M http://www.hm.com/ etc. do so well–they’re ‘Fast Fashion’ at a VERY good price.
I bet Eddy and Patsy (from Absolutely Fabulous)are crying right now!
