Where are the Olympic fashions for curvy women?

I was a huge jock growing up and came from a very athletic family. I joke that I came out of my mother’s womb with a softball in one hand and a basketball in the other. So, I get really into the Olympics – especially when Canada hosts. Bring on the hockey!
I am adamant about wearing red and white when Olympic festing – I want to look Canadian, shop Canadian and support Canadian athletes. But I have to get this off my chest, why do I generally have to wear men’s clothing to do so? My 2000 and 2002 Olympic shirts are men’s sizing. This year, I am lucky to have found 1 XXL women’s jersey after much searching but if I am a size 14, what are curvier women going to wear? Answer: Men’s clothing.
I love all the styles available, love that in true Canadian fashion many will opt to wear the Hockey Canada jerseys but I just wish my choices weren’t taken away from me due to sizing. The cut on a woman’s shirt is different than a man’s. I may be an athletic person but I still like to look like a woman in the way that I dress. So, for the next Olympics, could we please make sizes all Canadian women can wear?
Yours on the curve,
Liis

The Olympic collection from Yhe Bay actually does a great job of outfitting curvy women. I’m wearing an XXL hoodie on my size 16 frame right now and it fits really nicely thru the waist. Same with the warm-up jackets and sweaters. Forget about Roots stuff tho. Their size XL is about a 12 and it sells out ASAP.

I totally agree!! I need plus size as well but I guess when it has to do with athletes and hockey teams etc they do not want fat people like myself wearing or promoting their sport!! My friend is a size 4 and she wears a large!! What has this world come to that a 4 is a large? But I sure would like to cheer and support my country and hockey/football team but i guess I can do it in silence, their loss they could make so much more money offering larger sizes, can you imagine the sales they would make!! Disappointed in this for sure!!

I totally agree with this discussion. It is impossible to find athletic wear in general for larger women. I have five children and I am not petite. In fact, I am muscular, large boned and tall. An XL is tight on me and frankly women want their casual wear a little lose and therefore typically size up. My entire family has “Canada” gear to cheer on their country but I, do not. I refuse to buy a great big hockey jersey to swim in and hide a figure that I should be fine with. I am a woman and I’m proud of my curses and don’t want to hide them behind a boxy men’s hockey jersey. Fortunately, I bought a scarf … at least they fit!

I am so glad to hear feedback from others about this topic! I have been getting increasingly frustrated in several stores holding up large size tops realizing they would be snug on my size 6-8 mom. Often an XL might fit a size 12 when it should fit a 14-16. An XXL top should fit a straight size 18-20 (and thus smaller plus sizes). The size ranges are off. And plus size Canadian/Olympic tops are non existent. (And if anyone knows of any, please, please send me a link so I can share with everyone! ) So, a shout out to Canadian plus-size retailers – there is a huge gap in the market – please fill it! If you make the shirts, we will buy them – in droves! (HINT: There is still time for Canada Day shirts and jerseys!) Heather, I too bought a scarf…no size issues there but sad to have to buy pieces by default don’t you think?

I am a size 18-20 and the HBC line couldn’t offer me anything. XXL’s fit very strangely, too roomy in the shoulder way too tight in the bust. Mens didn’t work either!! Hips way too tight. Spent hours in the Olympic shop early in the season trying on every possibility, came up with zero. Such a shame and a missed opportunity for retailers. I am not the only one: all of my curvy and plus size co-workers here in Langley BC are either swimming in mens elephant-armed jerseys this week or are lamenting the fact that they can’t find appropriate clothing. No point in purchasing a scarf – my company determined only shirts are acceptable for dress code – no scarves or hats allowed!
